Column Eleven: The Lester Bangs Effect

by Kevin F Holy

Now it's time to takle somethin serious, something we'll call the Lester Bangs phenomenon: the phenomenon in rock music, and in pop, rap, that dictates that some of the most ambitious playerz in the game get offed. Lots of famous people are dead: from Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and John Lennon to 2pac, the Notorious B.I.G., Left Eye, and Aaliyah. These people were some of the most ambitious or talented. They each died too soon, sometimes self-inflicted.

While it's important to respect those who have passed, and yes, Aaliyah and Left Eye were involved in accidents (like Buddy Holly), and Lennon, Shakur, and Biggie were shot: take steps to prevent your own, even if you aren't as talented (I'm not).

I've seen it across people in my generation: from Joseph Kahn's twitter, to Daniel Askill to me (and hopefully Shawn Mendes): we young people don't want to die young. It's dumb.

Personally, I want to be on a Today Show Smuckers jar on Oct 9, 2078, thanks.
